Hindeloopen (20 km)

The wooden bridges over narrow canals give the city of Hindeloopen a special atmosphere. In this Frisian city (one of the Frisian Eleven Cities) much reminds us of the glory days that Hindeloopen experienced in the 17th and 18th centuries. There was then a lively trade with Norway, the Baltic Sea countries and Russia. Many of the earnings were spent in Amsterdam, with which Hindeloopen had a good relationship, on precious fabrics and objects supplied by the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC). As a result, Hindeloopen grew into a center of interior and painting art. Because of their wealth, the Hindeloopers also had their own colorful costumes. In the narrow streets there are still some captain's houses with small anchors on the facade, as a sign that the skipper could still accept cargo. In the summer the sailors' wives lived with their children in the small houses behind the large houses, these are the 'likhûzen'. The 'Hidde Nijland Foundation' museum is located in the former town hall, where you can get acquainted with the typical Hindelooper culture.
